The first „hump day“ after the holidays proves to be the #1 day for job seekers looking for new opportunities

Through the analysis of proprietary data, Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: MWW), a global leader in successfully connecting people and job opportunities, has discovered that with the start of the new year ushers in the busiest day of the year for job searching. Wednesday, January 6 is anticipated to be the top job search day of 2016. That’s based on 2014 and 2015 data showing that there were 70% more job searches on the first Wednesday of the year when compared to an average day on Monster that year.

MONSTER UNCOVERS THE BUSIEST DAY FOR JOB SEARCHING IS THE FIRST WEDNESDAY OF THE YEAR

If late November and December is a time for family, reflection and pause — and banner days like ‚Black Friday‘ and ‚Cyber Monday‘ – the other bookend of the season might best be called ‚Find Better® Wednesday.‘ In fact, last December job searches declined by nearly 7% from November, as job seekers took a hiatus, instead pursuing gift-giving, eggnog and ugly sweaters. But, that lull ends not long after the ball drops and job searches traditionally soar on this first Wednesday, as seen in 2014 and 2015 Monster job search data.

„This historic uptick could be attributed to a combination of many things, but we believe as people return to work after the holidays, they are more motivated and aware that better is out there,“ said Vicki Salemi, career expert for Monster. „If Monday and Tuesday are all about getting back into the swing of things, it’s that first ‚hump day‘ – Wednesday – that seems to give us an extra push to see what’s out there. So if you’re searching today, you’re not alone.“

Recent data also reveals that job seekers in 2015 searched most for part-time jobs, sales jobs and accounting jobs. These areas have grown exponentially. For example, ‚gig economy‘ jobs have been trending as people, particularly millennials, are having more of an entrepreneurial mindset seeking part-time jobs to pay the bills while they achieve something bigger.
